JUST ANOTHER FILM REVIEW
I adore films. Whether that be a black and white silent classic or a popcorn fuelled blockbuster I am at my happiest when escaping into the worlds that only films can create. This blog allows me to go on a journey of film discovery and although there will be good and bad times along the way it is an adventure that I hope you will join me on. I don't take myself too seriously, you shouldn't either. - Robert Hay

Day 31: Godzilla Ranked
We are at the end of the journey through all thirty live action Godzilla films. We laughed, we cried (not really), but we had a good time the whole way. And so, we come to the rankings. Before getting into this I do want to say, there is only one of those films that I actively dislike, and the vast majority of them I enjoyed overall despite any issues that may or may not have existed within them. I have enjoyed watching all of these and I have found a few films that I will de

Day 30: Godzilla Minus One (2023)
So, we have reached the final Japanese live-action Godzilla film. What a ride it has been. And we are ending with a film that I actually reviewed just over a year and a half ago, that being Godzilla Minus One (2023) . I have no idea how much this review will match up with that one so let’s get on with it and see. The film opens in 1945 with a kamikaze pilot, Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), landing on Odo Island to get his plane fixed, although the mechanics find nothing

Day 29: Shin Godzilla (2016)
We have reached the Reiwa era of Godzilla films, which also happens to be the era we are currently living through. There is only two films currently in this era, one of which is today’s film Shin Godzilla (2016) . This was the longest gap between films at 12 years, and I think it maybe was because with Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) was a send off to the whole franchise. But you can’t keep the big boy down forever, and he comes back here with a bang. The film is set in a modern

Day 28: Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)
We are getting very close to the end of this series, and with Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) we have reached the end of the Millenium era. An era that mostly rebooted itself with each and every film, with only two films in the era being connected. This film does not break that rule, again being a standalone from the rest. It also is the fiftieth anniversary film for the franchise. And it also happens to be absolutely mental. The film opens with Godzilla being trapped in ice by t

Day 27: Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S (2003)
The penultimate film of the Millennium era is also the first sequel of the era. Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S (2003) follows on directly from the previous film, but effectively just becomes the same film over again. The film also sees the return of Mothra, who opens the film. The two fairies from previous Mothra films also return to Japan to warn humans that they must return the bones of the original Godzilla, which were used to create Mechagodzilla, to the sea as humans cannot captu

Day 26: Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)
Another review a day late, but its been Christmas so I’m going to let myself off. I also need to watch another film and write another review before the end of the day so I will be keeping this one fairly short. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) continues the redemption of the Millennium era, even if it is not quite as good as the previous film. The film again does not follow on from the last so tells a completely new story. Forty fiver years after the original Godzilla a

Day 25: Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)
Merry Christmas one and all! What better way to celebrate than with our favourite radioactive lizard! And all of his friends have come to join him as well, it really is Christmas. Although, in Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) Godzilla is a bit of a Scrooge. After an American submarine goes missing, the Japanese Self-Defence Forces who were set up in the aftermath of Godzilla’s 1954 attack on Japan, searches for it and finds it was destr

Day 24: Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
After the first film of the Millennium era of Godzilla films left me disappointed, I was really hoping that it would pick back up with the next film. And thankfully, Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000) did just that. At least it did for me, it seems that the general consensus is that film is worse than the previous one. But I would wholeheartedly disagree. The film is not connected to the previous film plot wise, instead having an opening prologue that creates its own lore. The at

Day 23: Godzilla 2000 (1999)
Not the best way to start a new era of films. Godzilla 2000 (1999) is the first film in the new era of this series, that begin the millennium era. And while the Heisei era had its duds, it was mostly a very solid era and would be a hard one to follow up on. And it’s a shame that this film couldn’t get this new era off to a better start. In this film, Godzilla is already a known entity to earth and lurks as a constant threat. Because of these there are two trains of thought on

December 22nd: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)
The end of the second era of Godzilla is upon us. An era that was big on continuity across films, that started very strongly and petered off a little. But because of how much I enjoyed the first film I held out hope that the final film, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995) , could end the era on a how. And I am here to say that not only does it accomplish that feat, but it has put itself right in the upper echelons of the best Godzilla films. The story sees Godzilla become a tickin
