Weapons (2025)

Had a busy couple weeks but I’m back and hitting it back off with a film I’ve been wanting to watch for a while. When I first saw the trailer for Weapons (2025) I felt like it looked like a fairly run of the mill horror film. However, once the reviews came out and it was pretty universally praised, I was intrigued. Then it got Oscar nominations and I was shocked. Then it won an Oscar and I knew I had to see it. I just couldn’t quite believe a film that looked as generic a horror film that there could be was getting such praise. Was it worth it?
I will start this off by saying that I spent a good chunk of this film thinking to myself ‘this was nominated for multiple Oscars?’ It does not fit the classic mould of what you would expect would get those nominations, so it was surprising. However, having looked it up after the fact and seen it was only nominated for two, for casting and best supporting actress, I can get on board with it a bit more. It’s still surprising, but not shocking. But enough about that, lets talk about the film. The film is classed as a horror/mystery according to Google, and that is valid. But let’s also whack comedy on to that shall we. This film is a lot of fun because it is so ridiculous. It starts of pretty intriguing in building the mystery of the film, but as it reveals more about what’s going on it goes full bonkers, and the last 5 minutes are pure comedy gold. I was genuinely laughing harder than I have for a while at what was effectively a looney tunes cartoon. I also enjoyed the structure of the film which was very reminiscent of Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) in how it flips its focus to different characters throughout. This style of storytelling can sometimes feel like you’re not going anywhere with the narrative as it effectively shows you the same scenes from different perspectives, and it does have that effect on this film as when it gets to the climax it feels a little rushed and not developed all that well. But I still liked it because I was just here for the nonsense. Not an amazing film but a very fun one.
