The Grudge (2020): Ugh.

Don’t expect this to be a long review. I mean, what can I really say about this film? It is your basic, run of the mill, dull as dull, cookie cutter, jump scare bullshit that is so prevalent today and that I am so sick of. And to be honest, I knew it would be before I watched it so I can’t even be mad at the filmmakers. They succeeded in making the kind of film they were going for and I am sure it was a fun experience for the teen audience that they are playing to, but I really took a dislike to it. The only reason I even bothered giving this a go is because I recently watched ‘Ju-On: The Grudge’ (2002) and really, really enjoyed it. I am not going to bother comparing the two films or blast this most recent version as being slanderous to the original material for two reasons. Firstly, it is the second remake of that original film and so if it just did the same story again what’s the point. And secondly, the first film was made for a Japanese audience whereas this was made for a Western audience so obviously the styles are going to be vastly different. Unfortunately for this film, its style consists of horribly bland visuals mixed with scares that are lazy as all holy hell. I hope you like quiet, quiet, quiet, BANG, because that is all this film can offer up. I can’t think of anything else to say about it. It isn’t horribly made or anything like that, but I am just so sick of this style of horror film. These predictable, boring jump scare films that do nothing for me and leave me completely numb from boredom. So yeah, its rubbish. Don’t even begin to bother with it.
