This is my first ever Dutch film, and if they are all like this one, I don’t think I’ll be coming back. Sint (2010) is a decent idea packaged in a bad film. In the same vein as films like Krampus (2015), it poses the idea of St Nick being an evil presence hell bent on murder rather than spreading joy. Like I said, a decent idea which has potential, but the film never really lives up to that.
What I can say about the film is that I can see why people would enjoy it. If you are fan of particular kind of horror, i.e. a bit silly and gory, this may very well be right up your street. I can enjoy those kinds of films from time to time, and the gore in this film can be fun with how over the top it can get. But at the same time that is all the film really has going for it. Only one character is really interesting, and he isn’t in the film all that much, the narrative is a bit all over the place with certain plot points being established and going nowhere, and everything in between the scenes with Sinterklaas are extremely dull and forgettable. The film is also billed as online as a horror comedy and while I admit it may just be a cultural thing in terms of humour and joke telling I didn’t laugh once, or at least I didn’t laugh once when I was meant to. There were a couple of times I laughed at the absurdity of what was going on, but not at any jokes the film attempted to tell. I can’t recommend it, especially when there are some genuinely great and/or entertaining Christmas horror films which will serve you much better.
