You may be aware of a recent trend of low-budget horror films based on children’s characters whose copyright has become public domain. Winne the Pooh was the first of these to get mainstream attention, and Mickey Mouse will soon be getting the same treatment. But that Mickey mouse film will not be the first foray into this sub-genre for the director, as before he did that, he did a film based on the Grinch, called The Mean One (2022). And if this is anything to go off, that Mickey Mouse film is going to be dogshit.
I can see the appeal of making horror films out of classic children’s characters. I do. The juxtaposition is a funny idea, and you also have a well know intellectual property to sell your film on. And with the Grinch especially, his character twisted just a little could work as horror villain. However, a funny idea does not mean that it is a good one, and The Mean One is already in the race to be the worst film I have seen this year. I just hated this. Its obviously trying to be funny, but the only thing laughable about it is how poorly put together it all is. It is just so cheap on all aspects. It is horribly shot and quite often has a glare on the screen which is distracting. The CGI is terrible and takes what may have been decent kills and makes them painful to see. And the acting is so wooden and lifeless pretty much across the board. There isn’t much else for me to say. Its horrendous.
