I have been meaning to watch A Very Murray Christmas (2015) for a good while, and that was before I even knew that it was directed by Sofia Coppola. It has also been on my list of films for a few years, only to be replaced for one reason or another. Well, we are finally hear, and was it worth the wait? Meh, probably not.
I will say this for the film, it is nice to look at it. It isn’t particularly surprising with Sofia Coppola at the helm as she is a great director (hell she directed my favourite film of all time), but she really does manage to capture an atmosphere which changes from scene to scene, from sad and cheap, to cozy and warm, and bombastic and bright. Her direction captures the feel of each set-piece. There is also a hell of a cast here, which is honestly half Wes Anderson, half Parks and Recreation. The issue we have here is that there is just not a whole lot of substance here. That isn’t the end of the world, after all this is basically just a variety show so is meant to be easy watching at Christmas. And it starts off okay, the general idea is good and it is going in a way that I was enjoying. And then we get to the bar and although it feels cosy in it’s atmosphere, it is basically just watching drunk people sing Christmas songs, and not very well. It picks up a bit again when Miley Cyrus comes in as she actually can sing, but as for the rest of the time it can get tedious and honestly quite painful. But it is still mostly harmless, and being less than an hour helps. I would say there is no need to rush out and see it but if you’re looking for something quick before bed this Christmas time you could do worse.
